Rep. Derrick Smith, a Democrat from west Chicago, sailed to victory in Illinois's primary election Tuesday despite having been indicted just last week on charges of bribery. The state lawmaker was the subject of a federal sting operation that allegedly caught him accepting a $7,000 cash bribe. Before being hit with the charges, Smith had received a significant amount of support from House Speaker Michael Madigan, who sank $60,000 into his primary campaign. Now, though, major state Democrats are likely to pressure Smith to resign so they can choose a different candidate to run in the fall.
