Eight people convicted of drug smuggling in Indonesia have reportedly been executed by the government. Attorneys and politicians made last-minute pleas on behalf of a group of prisoners that included one Australian. Filipino Mary-Jane Veloso was given a last-minute reprieve after a woman reportedly surrendered to police and said she recruited Veloso to run drugs. Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop called the lead-up to the executions “ghastly,” and said that there “will have to be consequences” if it went forward as planned.
