Shared intelligence in trust-building exercise backfires.

This might pose a problem to the U.S. and Pakistan's new joint counterterrorism plan. The U.S. has given Pakistan the location of insurgent bomb-making factories several times in recent weeks, only to have the insurgents learn their cover had been blown and disappear. The U.S. gave Pakistan the intelligence as part of a trust-building exercise following the raid that killed Osama bin Laden, but now officials are worried the information was either accidentally leaked or deliberately given to the insurgents. The leaks will likely be a primary topic of conversation between Pakistani officials and CIA director Leon Panetta, who arrived in Pakistan yesterday.
