Tech manufacturer Intel is abandoning its sponsorship of the science competition bearing its name, which it has backed since 1998. The competition was started in 1942, and separate male and female winners were named until 1949. Over the years, it has grown to be America’s most prestigious math and science competition for high-school students, with Intel giving away more than $1.6 million in scholarship money annually.
