The lead investigator and another police officer looking into the recent massacre of 72 migrants in northern Mexico have gone missing, President Felipe Calderón said Friday. Though Mexican media had reported Friday that the body of the lead investigator, identified as Roberto Jaime Suarez Vazquez, had been found, Calderón reiterated that there is no information about his whereabouts. Both men disappeared Wednesday afternoon. The second official missing, a municipal police officer in San Fernando, has not been identified, according to the attorney general's office in the state of Tamaulipas, where the bodies of the 72 migrants were found Tuesday. The bodies were found fully clothed and blindfolded with their hands bound, with one survivor claiming the migrants had been kidnapped by a gang but refused to work for it. Another survivor has reportedly said the Zetas drug cartel is behind the killings.
