A family of four from Iowa found dead while vacationing near Mexico’s resort town of Tulum inhaled toxic gases in their vacation rental, authorities said late Saturday. The state prosecutor’s office in Quintana Roo said the type of gas had not yet been determined, but “any violent act or suicide has been discounted.” Mexican police discovered the bodies of 41-year-old Kevin Sharp; his 38-year-old wife, Amy Sharp, and their children Sterling, 12, and Adrianna, 7, on Friday after concerned family members reported them missing when they didn’t return home as planned. Investigators have reportedly begun examining the gas connections to a stove in the family’s rented condo but the findings have not yet been made public.
