26-year-old Iranian Reyhaneh Jabbari was hanged in a prison in Tehran on Saturday after she was convicted of killing a man she said tried to rape her. Jabbari had been imprisoned since 2007 for the murder of Morteza Abdolali Sarbandi, a former intelligence ministry worker. Amnesty International has called the execution “deeply disappointing in the extreme.” Government news agency Tasnim said on Saturday that Jabbari was executed after her relatives failed to gain consent from the victim’s family for a reprieve and that her claims of self-defense had not been proved in court.
