Iran has jailed filmmaker Jafar Panahi, whose film The White Balloon won the Camera d’Or award at Cannes in 1995. He was convicted of gathering, colluding, and disseminating propaganda against the government—and has been handed a six-year prison sentence and a ban on making films, traveling abroad, or giving interviews for 20 years. Filmmakers like Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, and Francis Ford Coppola have condemned the arrest.
