The BBC reports that Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei has allowed his top commander to coordinate with U.S., Iraqi, and Kurdish forces in the fight against ISIS, according to sources in Tehran. An Iranian foreign ministry official denied the report however, telling Iran’s Press TV that the report is incorrect. Meanwhile, CNN’s Christiane Amanpour tweeted that Iraqi President Fuad Masum confirmed Iran’s approval of U.S. operations on Thursday. Either way, Iran has typically opposed U.S. intervention in its ally Iraq and has criticized the U.S.’s decision to launch air strikes on ISIS only after its interests were threatened.
