Demonstrations had quieted down in Iran since those that flared up at the funeral of a young student who was killed in clashes with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's regime last month. But on Tuesday, opposition leader Mir Hossein Moussavi’s website claimed that police in Tehran fired tear gas to break up protests near Revolution Square. Iran’s opposition movement had organized demonstrations in light of International Women’s Day. Along with the demonstrations in February, these are the first major protests in Iran since thousands gathered in 2009 to protest Ahmadinejad's re-election, which the demonstrators denounced as fraudulent. But like many other countries across the Middle East and Africa, Iran's people are pushing for government reform.
