Iran’s Revolutionary Guard on Saturday slammed the U.S. Navy for an “unprofessional” encounter in the Persian Gulf that it says saw the U.S. fire flares at an Iranian vessel. Iran’s official IRNA news agency claims the USS Nimitz and an accompanying ship got close to an Iranian rocket-bearing vessel near an oil and gas platform before sending out a helicopter and firing flares. “The Americans made a provocative and unprofessional move by issuing a warning and shooting flares at vessels,” a statement from the Revolutionary Guard said. The statement said “Islam’s warriors” continued to go about their business after the “unconventional and unusual behavior from the American vessels.” The U.S. Navy has yet to comment on Iran's claims, but the news comes less than a week after a similar incident saw a U.S. Navy patrol boat fire warning shots near an Iranian ship.
