Iranians Mock Bibi on Twitter

FAUX PAS

For mistakenly asserting they’re banned from wearing jeans.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu prompted mocking tweets from Iranians after mistakenly asserting that the country bans wearing blue jeans. “I think if the Iranian people had freedom, they would wear jeans, listen to Western music, and have free elections,” Bibi said during an interview with BBC Persian TV over the weekend. Netanyahu’s foot-in-mouth comments distracted from his broader stance that Iran—“a wolf in sheep’s clothing”—is trying to pull the wool over the United States’ eyes regarding its nuke program. Iranians tweeted pictures of themselves in blue jeans, addressing Bibi directly: “Mr. Netanyahu, here is a shop selling weapons of mass destruction in Iran,” read one caption under a picture of a denim store.
