Is Perry Behind Texas’s New License Plates?

Show three crosses and say “One State Under God.”

The decision by the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles to approve a new specialty license plate has embroiled Rick Perry in controversy. The plates say, “One State Under God” and show three crosses, and critics say it is an example of how Perry is “dismissive of religious beliefs other than his own.” Perry did not personally approve the plates, but all of the members of the DMV board were appointed by Perry. A statement from Perry’s office said, “This was a decision for the DMV board and Gov. Perry was not involved.” This is the second license-plate controversy in Texas since Perry announced he was running for president: a group called the Sons of Confederate Veterans filed suit against Texas for rejecting license plates featuring the confederate flag. Perry had publicly stated his opposition to those plates.
