ISIS militants released videos of the detonation of two Muslim shrines near the ancient city of Palmyra, raising fears about the fate of the ancient ruins. One of the destroyed shrines was the tomb of Mohammed Bin Ali, a companion of the Prophet Muhammad’s cousin, while another was a 500-year-old shrine to Sufi scholar Nizar Abu Bahaa Eddine. The detonations come after ISIS was reported to have booby-trapped the Palmyra ruins last week, despite the fact that the militant group didn’t immediately wreck the ancient city as many had feared.
