French officials said a man who claimed allegiance to ISIS fatally stabbed a police commander in front of his home just outside of Paris. The assailant then killed the 42-year-old’s partner, who also worked in police administration, after holding her and the couple’s 3-year-old son hostage. President François Hollande called the attack “incontestably a terrorist act,” adding that France is clearly facing a terror threat “of a very large scale.” The perpetrator was killed and later identified as Larossi Abballa, 25, who was reportedly already known to police for radicalism in addition to having a previous conviction for terrorist crimes. Abballa reportedly played a role in a recruitment network linked to jihadis in Afghanistan and Pakistan. He was sentenced the three years in prison. The victim was identified as Jean-Baptiste Salvaing. “Refuse fear, fight terrorism,” Prime Minister Manuel Valls tweeted. “A couple of police officers had been savagely assassinated.”
