Israel passed a law Monday that will penalize any person or organization that calls for a boycott of Israel—including those that criticize the controversial West Bank settlements. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was not present for the vote, but the opposition blasted it and said the law is unconstitutional and irresponsible. According to the law, any organization that calls for a boycott of Israel or the settlements can be sued by the boycott’s targets—who do not have to prove they suffered any sustained damage. The law also says a person or company that declares a boycott will not be welcome to bid in Israel’s government tenders.
