The Italian tennis star Camila Giorgi, who shockingly announced her retirement from the sport last week, was reportedly being probed by tax authorities when she quietly left her native country. Giorgi, 32, is being investigated along with her family by the Guardia di Finanza, a government agency that specializes in financial crimes in Italy, for allegedly refusing to pay taxes or declare her full income, reported La Gazzetta dello Sport. Giorgi, who won four WTA singles titles and was a Wimbledon 2018 quarterfinalist, reportedly has fled Italy for the U.S. where she plans to pursue a career as a model. Giorgi, who posted a paltry record of 3-9 this season, raked in $6.4 million in prize money during her tennis career, with her most successful stretch—and highest world ranking, at No. 26—coming in 2018. She’s spoken out to deny rumors that she fled Italy to avoid paying taxes, with her lawyers telling ANSA that she will “return to Italy soon” and that “Camila’s withdrawal from competitive competitions has nothing to do with the affair linked to the Guardia di Finanza investigations.”
