The top-ranked U.S. women's team lost the soccer World Cup to Japan. With a win within reach twice, the U.S. gave it away both times. A mistake on defense gave Japan a 2-2 tie during regulation play, and a corner goal with three minutes remaining forced penalties. The U.S. team only landed one penalty kick during the final shootout, while Japan nailed three of its first four, for a shootout final of 3-1.
