Jeff Koons is the latest artist selected to design BMW’s Art Car. He will be the 17th artist, including Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, and Frank Stella, to join the program that began in 1975. BMW President Jim O’Donnell joined Koons at the artist’s massive Chelsea studio to announce his upcoming participation in the program. While most artists have opted merely to paint the cars in their signature styles, for the last effort in 2007, Olafur Eliasson’s covered his vehicle in ice, forcing those who wanted to see it to step into a room at subzero temperatures. But Koons’ contribution, which is seven years in the making since he first expressed interest in 2003, won’t be revealed until later this year. Still, some predict that he too, like Eliasson, will go beyond the basic paint job, considering his trademark colossal reproductions of banal objects.
