Online discourse ensued: Martin Freeman himself addressed the so-called controversy, calling the film “grown-up and nuanced” and adding it was a “shame” people couldn’t see it as such. Now, Ortega has finally weighed in, telling Vanity Fair in a recent interview, “It’s not supposed to be a comfortable movie. It’s supposed to be awful at times.” Ortega added that movies should show “f---ed-up experiences at one point or another,” since “Art isn’t always meant to be pleasant or happy, and everyone skips off into the sunset.”
