A Jewish teen aboard a New York to Kentucky flight caused the captain to divert the plane to Philadelphia when the young man tried to pray using small black boxes containing prayers, known as "tefillin." The young man explained the ritual—during which the praying person straps the boxes to his arm and head—to the crew, who claimed later that they "did not receive a clear response." The boy, who was traveling with his sister on their way to visit their grandmother, was "more alarmed" than the police who greeted him, according to Philadelphia Police Lt. Frank Vanore.
