Before they return to television on Jan. 24 for an all-new X-Files mini-series, Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully popped up on Jimmy Kimmel Live! last night. And they needed some help getting up to speed on what they’ve missed since the ’90s.
Kimmel took on the role of their new FBI partner, tasked with helping the pair get “back in the swing of things” after a 13-year hiatus (the original show ended its run in 2003). But when Scully failed to get a signal on her enormous Zack Morris-style cellphone, Kimmel offered up his iPhone. Things didn’t go much better when they tried to connect to the “The Internets” using a dial-up modem and AOL.
“This isn’t the ’90s anymore, we’ve moved on,” Kimmel told the pair, who protested that they should be remembered along with Hootie and the Blowfish, Beanie Babies, and Pogs. If those things have all been forgotten, what about The X-Files?
“We loved you then and we loved you now,” Kimmel assured them. “Even if coming back turns out to be a bad idea, like a really, really bad idea that makes everyone hate you, we’ll still always have the ’90s.”
“Also, you two should have sex,” he told them as, finally, the two FBI agents began furiously making out to the strains of Hootie’s “Only Wanna Be With You.”
In his interview with actors Duchovny and Anderson, Kimmel continued to stoke their sexual tension, at one point asking, “What is going on between you two?”
