The Labor Department announced Wednesday that initial claims for state unemployment benefits hit a 14-year low, yet another sign of a recovering economy. The claims dropped 23,000 to a seasonally adjusted 264,000, a level last seen in 2000. The national unemployment rate remains at 5.9 percent.
