Rep. Joe Kennedy III (D-MA) will deliver the Democratic response to President Trump’s State of the Union address next Tuesday. In a statement released Thursday night, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Kennedy, a “relentless fighter for working Americans,” would counter the speech by Trump, whose “first year has been marred by his broken promises to the middle class.” Virginia Delegate Elizabeth Guzman, the first Hispanic female immigrant elected to the Virginia House of Delegates, is also due to deliver a Spanish-language response to Trump’s address. The two will stress that Democrats are “laser-focused” on policies for “middle-class Americans, not special interests or the wealthiest.”
