Arizona Sen. John McCain survived by a comfortable margin Tuesday when he won the GOP primary against conservative challenger J.D. Hayworth. In one of the most public battles, McCain – once known as the “maverick” and a moderate – was forced to move further to the right and even ask his vice-presidential pick Sarah Palin to stump for him. Hayworth, a former congressman and talkshow host, had accused McCain of being a “political shape shifter,” while McCain, who spent $21 million on his campaign, tried to paint Hayworth as having close ties to Washington lobbyist Jack Abramoff. Arizona governor Jan Brewer – in the middle of a national political firestorm over illegal immigration legislation – won an easy victory against her opponent. Ben Quayle, the son of former Vice President Dan Quayle, faced off against nine other Republicans in a North Phoenix Congressional race that was still close to call.
