One particular case raising troubling questions about what John Paul knew involves an Austrian cardinal and friend of his, who is accused of abusing an estimated 2,000 boys over a span of many years but did not receive a rebuke from Rome. During a service in Vienna this week, one Austrian cardinal condemned the church's "sinful structures" which allowed abuse to go unpunished.
