116 people have now been confirmed dead since a tornado tore through Joplin, Missouri on Sunday evening, and expect the death toll to rise even further. But at least ten more people have been found amid the wreckage, raising the total number rescued to 17. The powerful storm has left much of Joplin in ruins; its 48,000 residents were given a mere 24-minute warning before the mile-wide twister touched down in the city at 166 miles per hour or more. The storm wiped out a nursing home, schools, firehouses, and several large stores, including a Walmart and a Home Depot. Officials have reported damaged water and sewage treatment plants and advised residents to boil their water.
