Asked by a reporter this week why President Trump has not commented on recent stories regarding the killing of unarmed black men, Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders described the incidents as “local matters” that the White House feels “should be left up to the local authorities at this point in time.”
In an online-only video posted to his Comedy Central show’s Twitter feed on Thursday, Jordan Klepper agreed wholeheartedly. “Yes, a local issue. Just look at all of these local issues,” he said, revealing a map of the United States with one red dot for every fatal police shooting since the 2014 killing of Ferguson, Missouri teenager Michael Brown.
“Just a bunch of totally unrelated small town and big city and medium village happenstances,” The Opposition host continued.
Klepper compared the situation to the time he found a mouse in his kitchen, then found more in his living room and bedroom. “But those are all single isolated mice, with single isolated presents they left on my pillowcase,” he joked.
“Now, my house doesn’t have a mouse problem,” Klepper said. “If it were a big house-wide issue, I would probably have to think of a systematic way to address it on a larger scale, but luckily it’s not.”
Extrapolating back out, Klepper argued that Trump doesn’t have time to deal with “local” issues. “He focuses on larger stories that affect the nation,” he said. “Like calling Roseanne to congratulate her on her spectacular ratings.”
