The city of Chicago formally sued Empire actor Jussie Smollett for the cost of the investigation into his allegedly staged hate crime attack. In the lawsuit, the city claimed Smollett “orchestrated the purported attack himself” and lied to police about it. “In investigating the Defendant’s false statements and false police report, the City incurred significant costs in order to provide services reasonably related to the Defendant’s conduct,” the suit alleges. The city previously announced its intention to sue the actor for $130,000 after Smollett ignored the city’s demand he pay for the staff overtime and other resources spent on the probe. On Thursday, TMZ reported that Smollett was in Hawaii “boogie boarding.”
