Will Kansas become the new live-free-or-die state? Maybe in taxes, at least: Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback and Republicans in the Statehouse are moving closer to eliminating the state income tax, a move that many in the GOP nationwide have hoped will serve as a model for other states. Kansas lawmakers received a bill Wednesday that reduces taxes, just one month after the largest tax cut in Kansas history took effect and after Medicaid was handed over to private insurers. “I think it’s the leading edge of the conservative economic movement,” said Kansas state Rep. Tom Sloan, although many critics—including in the Republican Party—have charged that these policies will leave many in the state without basic services or even proper education.
