Kanye West on Sunday donated $150,000 to the GoFundMe memorial page for Jemel Roberson, the Illinois security guard who was shot and killed last Sunday when a police officer mistook him for a shooter. Roberson, an on-duty security guard, had pinned down the real shooter—but an unidentified officer shot him when he refused to drop his weapon. Witnesses say multiple people were yelling at the officer to tell him that Roberson was a guard. The donation has allowed Roberson’s family to raise $309,831 as of Sunday night, which more than doubled their original goal of $150,000. Roberson’s slaying has since sparked national outrage, CNN notes, with Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) tweeting, “Words can't begin to describe my horror and outrage,” and an attorney for Roberson’s partner threatening to release the name of the officer responsible on Monday. Roberson’s mother has also filed a lawsuit, alleging her son’s slaying “was excessive and unreasonable.”
