Rapper Kanye West donated $73,540 to Chicago mayoral candidate Amara Enyia after Chance the Rapper endorsed her in a crowded race to replace Mayor Rahm Emanuel, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Enyia, who is currently the executive director of a Chicago suburb’s chamber of commerce, reportedly only had $67.54 at the close of the third quarter. Her campaign announced they have used West’s donation to resolve a $73,540 debt to the Illinois State Board of Elections, reportedly from “filing fees and penalties never paid that must be resolved before she can get on the mayoral ballot.” “The Amara Enyia campaign thanks Chicago native, Kanye West, for his generous action. Amara’s campaign is energizing people around the city with bold ideas and solutions that move Chicago forward,” her campaign said in a statement. “We are excited to engage people of all walks of life as we focus our efforts on getting on the ballot.” The celebrity endorsements may help Enyia stand out in a race with 17 candidates, but it might not help her win votes. County Commissioner Stanley Moore, who did not endorse Enyia for mayor, told the newspaper that West’s donation could raise questions. “If you accept money from a person like Kanye West, are you also endorsing his stance on Donald Trump?” Moore asked.
