German photographer Jonas Unger—best known for his editorial work—is making his Parisian debut with a new exhibit at the city's Galerie Derouillon. The retrospective, titled Autoportraits, is comprised of a series of selfies specifically comissioned by Unger that features celebrities and fashion mavens including the likes of Karl Lagerfeld, Jean-Paul Gaultier, and Karolina Kurkova. Providing only an analog camera, Unger asked his subjects to take the images themselves without specific instructions. The result is a series of intimate and individually unique portraits, capturing an array of different facial expressions and emotions—Givenchy's Riccardo Tisci stares down the camera, while French actor Gérard Depardieu cuts off part of his chin. It is through these photographs that Unger aims to provoke—and present—the purist form of humanity and to understand "what connects us to these figures, the same ones that disappear so often behind the mask of their coverage."
Jonas Unger, Autoportraits, will be on display through May 21 at the Galerie Derouillon in Paris.
