If Heidi Klum and Seal couldn’t survive, what chance was there for TomKat? In April 2005, Tom Cruise, then 42, confirmed he was dating 26-year-old Dawson’s Creek star Katie Holmes in Italy, where Cruise was receiving a lifetime achievement award. Cruise told reporters that Holmes was an “extraordinary woman” and later grabbed the TV camera with both hands and said “do you see the smile on my face?” It was the beginning of some action-packed months for the couple: in May, Cruise famously jumped on a couch on Oprah, declaring “I love this woman”; then in June, he proposed by the Eiffel Tower; and in October, Holmes announced she was pregnant with their first—and only—child. After a brief scandal over whether their daughter, Suri, really existed—they hid her from the public for the first few months of her life—they were married at a castle in Italy in November 2006. But after five years together, filled with his public redemption and near-weekly mentions in the tabloids, in June 2012 they announced they would be divorcing.

Following his split from Spanish beauty Penélope Cruz in 2004, Cruise reportedly dated another Latin bombshell, Modern Family star Sofia Vergara. Andrew Morton, author of Tom Cruise: An Unauthorized Biography, wrote that Cruise had his heart set on marrying the Colombian actress, but his strong belief in Scientology deterred her and, eventually, she stopped returning his calls. The two stopped being seen together in early 2005.

Couldn’t anyone have seen that a couple with the names Cruise and Cruz might be doomed? Cruise met Penélope Cruz in 2000, while they were filming Cameron Crowe’s Vanilla Sky, but didn’t start dating until 2001, after his 10-year marriage to Nicole Kidman ended. They split in January 2004 after three years together, with a source saying “the relationship just ran its course.” Both insisted the split was “amicable.”

Tom Cruise is apparently a man who falls in love fast. A mere nine months after divorcing actress Mimi Rogers, Cruise walked down the aisle with his Far and Away costar Nicole Kidman, on Christmas Eve 1990. Always the oddball, Cruise reportedly wore jeans and no shoes to his wedding. The couple adopted two children together, Connor and Isabella, and announced their divorce in February 2001.

Cruise’s second and third marriages have received considerable public attention, but what about his first marriage to actress Mimi Rogers? The pair married in an ultra-secret wedding in 1987 in upstate New York. At the time, the couple seemed like a strange pairing: she was six years his senior, and she had been linked to many famous actors, including Tom Selleck, Christopher Reeve, and Robert Shriver. After they split, Rogers told Playboy that “Tom was seriously thinking of becoming a monk … he thought he had to be celibate to maintain the purity of his instrument” and she said her instrument “needed tuning.” They never had any children, and rumors of his infertility ran rampant. Years after the divorce, Rogers told People that she’s “waiting for the day I don’t have to talk about that [blankey-blank] face anymore.”

In the 1980s, a leather-studded, rock-and-roll, 39-year-old Cher had a brief affair with the Legend-era, 23-year-old Cruise. In 2008, Cher divulged some details about their fling in an interview with Oprah, saying that, if not for their filming schedules, it could have been “a great big romance because I was crazy for him.” Cher told Entertainment Tonight that the two went their separate ways shortly after the release of Risky Business, when she “couldn’t go to Chicago and that was kind of the straw that broke the camel’s back.”
