U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry arrived in Moscow on Tuesday to meet with Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov and later with President Vladimir Putin to discuss ending the conflicts in Syria and Ukraine. In remarks before their sit-down, Kerry said he wanted to make “real progress” with Lavrov. “The world benefits when powerful nations can find common ground and I hope today we can find some common ground,” Kerry added. The two countries remain at odds over the role of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the peace process. Kerry will try to secure a third round of negotiations among world powers on Syria.
