Kidnapped Mexican Mayor Found Dead

Violence against officials gets worse.

The kidnapped Mexican mayor, who was taken from his home in Monterrey Sunday night, has been found dead. Edelmiro Cavazos' body—his hands bound and his head taped—was found outside the town he once ran. The discovery marks an increase in drug-cartel violence aimed at elected officials. Police don't know who is responsible. The region's governor is pleading with the federal government for additional troops. Mexican business leaders have also added pressure on the government, running a major newspaper ad demanding government action. The men who took Cavazos sported the uniforms of a police force and arrived with cars sporting patrol lights. According to the Associated Press, more than 28,000 people have died in the country's drug war since 2006.
