L.A. Schools to Pay Abuse Victims $139M

JUSTICE

For victims of child abuse scandal.

The Los Angeles Unified School District will pay $139 million in settlements to victims of the Miramonte Elementary School child abuse scandal. The money will go to about 150 legal claims from former Miramonte students, who were subjected to lewd acts by third-grade teacher Mark Berndt, who pled no contest to the charges a year ago and has been sentenced to 25 years in prison. Dozens more claims were settled for about $30 million last year but a group of parents opted to take the case to civil court, claiming that L.A. Unified was not doing enough to protect students from Berndt after past complaints about him.
