A top Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department official announced his resignation Sunday after facing public backlash over offensive emails he forwarded to others from his work computer. Tom Angel, who was chief of staff for Sheriff Jim McDonnell, reportedly sent emails mocking Muslims, blacks, Latinos, and women while working as the Burbank Police Department’s assistant chief three to four years ago. The emails were recently revealed in a Los Angeles Times report. The messages included language such as, “I took my biology exam last Friday. I was asked to name two things commonly found in cells. Apparently ‘Blacks’ and ‘Mexicans’ were NOT the correct answers.” McDonnell said in a statement Sunday that he had accepted Angel’s resignation.
