Dairy titan Land O’ Lakes announced Tuesday that it will no longer donate to Iowa Rep. Steve King (R) after his comments on immigrants and George Soros raised eyebrows in the wake of the Pittsburgh massacre. Bloomberg News reports that King has supported Trump’s push to end birthright citizenship, and retweeted a conservative European news outlets’ comments about “Satan [George] Soros” last October. He also publicly backed Faith Goldy, a far-right candidate for Toronto’s mayor. “The Land O’Lakes Inc. PAC has traditionally contributed to lawmakers of both parties that represent the communities where our members and employees live and work and are also on committees that oversee policies that directly impact our farmer owners,” the company said in a statement. “We take our civic responsibility seriously, want our contributions to be a positive force for good and also seek to ensure that recipients of our contributions uphold our company’s values. On that basis, we have determined that our PAC will no longer support Rep. King moving forward.”
Land O’ Lakes’ comments come after Judd Legum, author of the newsletter Popular Information, asked the company on Twitter why it had donated $2,500 to King. Legum’s tweet was retweeted 11,000 times and liked 22,000 times, Bloomberg notes, with many consumers threatening to boycott the company’s products. King will face off against Democrat J.D. Scholten on Nov. 6.
