A magnitude 7.8 earthquake hit Iran on the border with Pakistan, the most powerful tremor in nearly 40 years. Shaking was felt as far as New Delhi, where buildings were evacuated. Indian television station NDTV said lights in its South Delhi studio shook for nearly a minute. At least five people died in Pakistan, according to local government officials. After saying 40 people were dead, Iranian state media now says no fatalities are confirmed. In 2003, a 6.6-magnitude earthquake killed 26,000 people.
