Larry Wilmore held up a pair of bolt cutters on his show last night and offered to help South Carolina politicians take down the Confederate battle flag that flies near the state capitol building.
"For the record, the confederate flag is not a proud symbol of tradition or heritage, it's a symbol of oppression and intimidation," Wilmore said. "That's not my opinion, that's an objective fact."
Wilmore poked holes in the "heritage" argument that is often made. The flag hasn't been flying since the Civil War—it went up in 1961, which, he pointed out, was "coincidentally, right around when the black people started with the wanting of the civil rights."
