Laurie Metcalf and John Lithgow to Star as ‘Hillary and Clinton’ on Broadway
GREAT WHITE WAY
Actors Laurie Metcalf and John Lithgow are set to star as Hillary and Bill Clinton in a new play on Broadway from playwright Lucas Hnath. The play, titled Hillary and Clinton, is reportedly set during the 2008 Democratic primaries and also features the former secretary of state’s chief strategist Mark Penn and her opponent Barack Obama, who is referred to only as “The Other Guy.” “It’s a political play—but not in the way I think anybody will expect,” producer Scott Rudin told The Hollywood Reporter. “It treats the Clintons like Shakespeare treated real people in his history plays—it is both fundamentally truthful and also wildly imaginative. It’s not in any way a docudrama or a work of nonfiction but rather an exploration of power and how it works, not only in the canvas of a political campaign but inside an enduring marriage.” Hillary and Clinton is slated to open next April on Broadway. Metcalf, the Roseanne co-star who was recently Oscar-nominated for her role in Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird, won her first Tony Award for playing Nora in Hnath’s 2017 play A Doll’s House, Part 2.
