Today marks the one-year anniversary of Heath Ledger’s tragic and untimely death, and he received an Academy Award nomination this morning for this role as the Joker in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight. Director Shekhar Kapur, a close friend of Ledger’s and presumably the last person to speak with him, reminisces in the Daily News about his friend’s life: “Heath Ledger was among those who we quietly whisper prayers for in our quiet moments, wish for in our dreams and have a special place in our everyday thoughts. God knows how many people in this world still carry the pain of his loss.” He notes the timing of the nomination, saying, “Wherever you are Heath, I can see you crinkling your eyes and laughing your deep laughter and saying, "Hey brother, what do you think of that?”
