David Nolan, who helped found the Libertarian Party in 1971 and has been a leader and champion of the cause ever since, died unexpectedly this week in Arizona. He was 66. Nolan was a perennial candidate for the House and Senate, running this season against John McCain and garnering 5 percent of the vote for the Libertarian ticket. "He not only helped found the Libertarian Party but remained active and helped to guide our party for the last 40 years," said Mark Hinkle, the chairman of the party.
