Lindsey Buckingham has left Fleetwood Mac, Variety confirmed on Monday. Rock guitarist Billy Burnett first accidentally broke the news last week when he tweeted (and then deleted): “Breaking news: Lindsey Buckingham is out but I’m not in.” Buckingham joined the band in 1975 and was part of a classic lineup that included Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Christine McVie, and Stevie Nicks. He wrote one of the band’s biggest hits, “Go Your Own Way,” off their most successful album, 1977’s Rumours. Buckingham was inducted with Fleetwood Mac into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998.
