Link to Pakistani Taliban Grows

Times Square

"Very likely" group had role in car bomb attempt.

Officials questioning Faisal Shahzad, the alleged perpetrator of the foiled car bomb attempt in Times Square last Saturday, are saying that the Pakistani Taliban "very likely" had a role in recruiting and training Shahzad, suggesting that the extremist group has had more success in inspiring home-grown terrorists than previously thought. Officials declined to reveal the evidence, and one senior official sought to make clear that there was not yet a "smoking gun," but Shahzad's interrogators hope that his cooperation will illuminate what they see as probable links to the Taliban, such as their possible financing of the SUV used in the attack and Shahzad's plane ticket to Dubai. Meanwhile, security measures are being tightened across the country, with airlines now being required to check no-fly lists more frequently. The Pakistani Taliban released a video claiming credit for the attack on Sunday.
