Louisiana state officials successfully took the first steps to make the Bible the official state book on Thursday. The proposal cleared the House Committee on Municipal, Parochial and Cultural Affairs by a vote of eight to five. Rep. Thomas Carmody, a Republican who proposed making the King James Bible the official state book, said "This is not about establishing an official religion.” Rep. Stephen Ortego, a Democrat, had concerns, though not about the inclusion of religion. "Let's make this more inclusive of other Christian faiths, more than just the ones that use the King James version," he said.
