Sir Peter Stothard on the week’s three best books.
In his weekly roundup, the editor of the Times Literary Supplement, Sir Peter Stothard, sums up three of the best books around the world. First, there’s the historian who asks, “What was it that made people happy?” Hint: hard work. Then there’s the opposite of happiness, which according to one Irish novelist, is love. And finally, Stothard highlights a book in which a leading historian looks back to foreign correspondents who were torn between love of country and “journalistic truth” as they covered the Spanish Civil War.
