Get ready to stay up late: The final total lunar eclipse of the year is set for December 21. The moon will go into a partial eclipse around 1:30 a.m., and then take on a vibrant red color until about 3:30 a.m. before finally returning to normal at around 5 a.m. A lunar eclipse occurs when the earth, moon and sun align, with the earth's shadow shielding the suns rays from the moon. It can only happen when the moon is full. The entire event will be visible from North America, Greenland and Iceland, while Europe and Asia will see either the beginning or end of the display.
