A 44-year-old mother is dead after joking with her son about a man whose feet were hanging out of a car window in Hawthorne, California. The 12-year-old boy locked eyes with one of the men in the vehicle, who then began following their car. “It appears to be random or misguided,” said Lt. Dave Coleman. “We’ll have to figure that out.... We know that, at some point, the little boy made eye contact with the suspect. We don’t know if that’s what set him off.” When the mother pulled their car over to tell a police officer that they were being followed, 38-year-old Robert Washington pulled up next to them and shot both mother and child. She died on the scene, while the boy remains in the hospital. The police officer shot and killed Washington.
